The Editing Process

We used Final Cut Pro X editing software which is very powerful, industry standard editing suite used at establishments such as Futureworks Studios and the BBC, and is an editing system which I am confident to edit on. For many of our special effects such as green screening and colour correction, we used the operations avaliable to us on this software.

Screen shot of Abi's title
This patrticular shot is evidence of the use of colour correction for effect. This image is the original for the footage without being edited and whilst it is very atmospheric, it is under exposed and lacks extensive saturation. When colour correcting, I increased the saturation so all the colours were bright which connoted happy, colourful experiences. When the saturation is increased, the under exposure also had to be increased to display the underlying depression evident in the film.

Screen shot from 'Sweet Revenge' edit
I decided to place two bars at the top and bottom of the screen for a more cinematic look displayed in all thriller films. Within this shot, there is also a black vignette placed around the edges of the shot to imply that he is enclosed in a dark and depressed world.

Screen shot from 'Sweet Revnge' edit
This screen shot has been taken from the dollie shot in the opening scene of Joe and Kym. As you can see on the bottom of Joe's hoodie there is slight intentional screen glare obtained from the light entering the iris of the camera, so it mimics his mental state and thinking back to this moment as being positive and dream like.

Sweet Revenge logo
This is the 'Sweet Revenge' logo used in our film which incorperates the binary oppositions of black and white to imply dark verus light, displaying the obvious shift from his dreamlike state thinking about Kym, to reality in his depressed state. The glow, italic font and stylistic design juxtaposes the hard, capitals of the revenge which states the main theme of the film.

Screen shot from the edit on Final Cut Pro X
This screen shot is from the edit our film and displays the overlayed transition between Joe's dreamlike state to reality and shows the half edited timeline.

We edited the green screen section which is an extensive job was difficult as the lighting when filming wasn't perfect as it was done outdoors and not in a green screen studio. So we used chroma key, frame by frame to edit all the green screen out and put a corresponding background footage that we shot when filming on the bridge.
